the quantum question

the question keeps coming up in different rooms.

what happens when quantum hits production?

bitcoiners worry it breaks the chain. ai builders worry it cracks the hash. founders worry it kills their moat. and most of them are wrong about which thing to worry about.

quantum is not a moat killer. it is a moat sorter.

the moats that depended on cryptographic obscurity were always weak. the moats that depended on raw compute were always temporary. the moats that depended on speed of execution.... those were never moats at all. they were just leads.

what quantum will sort for is real moats. the kind that come from network effects. from trust. from compounded judgment. from people who have shown up for a decade in the same room.

bitcoin survives because the network is the moat. not the curve. the network upgrades the curve when it has to. ten years ago they hard forked for less. they will hard fork again if quantum demands it. the political will is already there.

ai survives because the data is the moat. not the model. you can copy the architecture. you can not copy the conversations that trained it.

robotics survives because embodiment is the moat. you can not download a hand.

the people who do not survive are the ones who built businesses around encryption magic. who built businesses around being the first to use a math trick. those moats were always rented.

i sat with brian lenahan this week. he runs the quantum strategy institute up here in canada. he is one of the few people thinking about this who is not selling fear.

his frame is simple. quantum will arrive in waves. the first wave is logistics optimization. the second is materials science. the third is drug discovery. the fourth.... the fourth is where cryptography starts to feel the pressure.

we have a decade. maybe two.

so the question is not whether to fear quantum. the question is what you would build if you knew that the only moats that survive are the ones based on trust and time.
