What is Sand Hill Angels?

Sand Hill Angels is a large Bay Area angel group that's been around since 2000. I joined in early 2014 after exiting my last startup, joined the board in 2016, and have been on the leadership team since. We're generalists who invest about 8 to 10 million dollars a year through an LLC structure, sourcing deals from accelerators like YC, Alchemist, and 500 Startups.

You were on the NS32332 microprocessor team at National Semiconductor back in the early 80s. What pulled a young engineer toward silicon at that moment in computing history?

I studied at the Technion, Israel's top technical university, focusing on microelectronics, digital communications, and some software. In the early 80s semiconductors were still a young industry. National Semiconductor had a design center near Tel Aviv building what I believe was the first 32-bit microprocessor. I applied, got hired, and that began a long career mostly spent on high performance microprocessor and memory subsystem design.

How did your degree and environment at the Technion shape the way you think about hard engineering problems?

The university's job was mainly to give you a basic skill set, since most real learning happens afterward. My degree was in double E focused on microelectronics, communications, and software, and the goal was to teach you to solve engineering problems and understand the scientific method. Entrepreneurship wasn't a big thing at the Technion back then, unlike today.

What did those early hands on years at the transistor level teach you that you still carry today?

It taught me that engineering is hard and that success requires discipline and a set of standards you work by, plus the ability to motivate people. I started as an engineer on a team, then moved into managing while still engineering, and eventually into director and VP roles. That first experience shaped how I approached design over and over as technology and complexity grew.

At NexGen you were chief designer on the Nx686, which became the guts of the AMD K6. What was it like being deep in a design going head to head with Intel?

It was a real challenge. We were a startup with limited resources trying to compete with Intel. We finally got a prototype, which led AMD to acquire us in 1995 after their K5 and K6 were in trouble. The resulting product probably did three to four billion dollars in revenue over its life, but competing with Intel felt like running on a treadmill with no rest.

You were named an AMD Fellow during the K6 era. What did earning that recognition require, and what did it change for you?

It brought credibility and respect. I was seen as a strong, smart engineer, and I needed a track record plus supporters within the company to nominate me, then a committee reviewed my achievements to decide if I was worthy. There were two levels at AMD, regular fellow and senior fellow, and I received the regular fellow designation.

You were an operator through six startups, four wins and two that failed. What did the failures teach you that the wins never could?

The first failure, Terara Microsystems, taught me you can build a commercially viable product but if there is no real market it will not work. We were doing Sparc compatible chipsets, but unless you sold to Sun Microsystems you were dead, and Sun did not buy from us. After two years our backers would not put in more money, so we pulled the plug.

What core problem is Silicon Catalyst trying to solve for semiconductor founders that the normal venture world isn't built for?

Silicon Catalyst the incubator started around 2014 or 2015 when semiconductors were out of favor, to support startups with financial and in kind help like design tools. In 2019 we realized many advisers wanted to invest specifically in semiconductor startups, so we launched Silicon Catalyst Angels as an affiliated but independent group focused only on semiconductor products.
