full white or full satoshi

my lawyer told me this years ago when i was running a bitcoin company in a country that didnt know what to do with bitcoin yet.

"you cant be gray. you either go full white. kyc, banks love you, fully compliant. or youre like satoshi and you just disappear."

middle is where you get killed.

and i think about this almost every week. especially watching founders try to play both sides.

they want to be a regulated financial product but also keep the cypherpunk customer base happy.

they want to publish a tokenomics paper but also tell the sec it isnt a security.

they want to comply with sanctions but also offer privacy.

each individual goal is reasonable. all of them at once is impossible.

and the founders who try to thread the middle path.... usually end up satisfying neither side.

the regulators dont trust them because they have privacy features. the cypherpunks dont trust them because they have kyc. they spend two years trying to please both audiences and lose both at once.

this isnt unique to bitcoin. it is true of every regulated industry where there is a vocal minority that wants the opposite of what the regulators want.

health tech. fintech. defense tech. ai safety.

in each one there is a temptation to straddle. and in each one the straddle gets you killed.

the discipline is to pick.

full white means you accept that some of your most idealistic customers wont use you. they wont give you their data. they wont turn on identity verification. they will say you sold out.

fine. you can build a billion dollar business without them.

full satoshi means you accept that you wont get the bank partnerships. you wont get the institutional capital. you wont get the regulators on your side. you wont have a corporate office.

fine. some of the most important products in the world were built that way.

both paths work. only the gray middle doesnt.

and i chose full white years ago. not because i love compliance. because i want to keep building. jail is a non starter. that is not negotiable for me with three kids at home.

so full white. compliant. licensed. boring as it sounds. that is my chosen path. and it gives me the freedom to keep showing up day after day for fifteen years.

satoshi made the other choice. you can make either choice.

but you have to make one.
