get that second check in the mail

seven words from his father kept him at a job he hated for another year, and turned a side project into an eight figure business.

a founder told me the best business advice he ever got was seven words from his dad.

get that second check in the mail.

he had just made real money on a side project and wanted to quit that week. his dad told him the first check is sometimes only luck. a favour, a fluke, one customer with budget to burn before year end. the second check is the one that proves a stranger will do it again without you asking twice.

he waited. that side project cleared eight figures this year.

the rest of the story is just as good. he noticed that ninety five percent of class action settlements go unclaimed, found one paying sixty three dollars with no receipt required, told his friends, and not one of them had heard of it. he built a website and emailed twenty four people. that list is a million people now.

he also got fired once for being difficult, and it took him four years to admit he would have fired himself too.

both halves of that are the lesson. patience about the second check, and honesty about why the first door shut.

is the money you are counting on right now a first check or a second one?
