the long horizon bet nobody wants to make anymore

the incentive structure around building companies right now rewards speed almost by default: fast raises, fast growth metrics, fast exits if possible. that pressure is real and mostly rational given how capital markets currently work. but it also means the genuinely long horizon bets, the ones that take years to prove out, have gotten quietly contrarian just by existing.

i've made a few multi-year bets recently on exactly this logic: if something is clearly directionally right but the market isn't ready to price it correctly yet, that mispricing is the opportunity, not a reason to avoid it. the discomfort of being early and unproven for a long stretch is the cost of admission for a thesis that hasn't been arbitraged away by everyone else already piling in.

the hard part isn't identifying the long horizon thesis, plenty of people can spot a real trend early. the hard part is having the actual patience and capital structure to survive being early for years without capitulating right before the thesis proves out. most people who correctly call a trend early still don't capture the upside, because they exit the position during the boring, doubtful middle years.

this requires being honest with yourself about what you're actually optimizing for, quick liquidity or genuine long term conviction, because trying to have both usually means you get neither cleanly.
