Tell the world about Morpheus. What's keeping you excited nowadays?
I really want to own my AI with my private key instead of some big tech company controlling it. When I read the Morpheus white paper in 2023, that idea of freedom of intelligence really inspired me. Two years later it's operating at scale, and open source models now have about 30 percent market share, up from 14 percent six months ago, because they're cheaper and just as good.
How does Morpheus compare to Bit Tensor?
I think of Bit Tensor as the supply side. People use tensor subnets to train models and provide inference, framing themselves as creators of digital commodities. Morpheus is on the demand side, driving users to that inference. It's not just Bit Tensor, Venice works the same way. Morpheus is agnostic. If you want to use Bit Tensor or Venice, knock yourself out, we just connect users to models.
Can you talk about Venice's relationship with Morpheus?
Eric Vorhees was an early Morpheus contributor who wrote the Yellowstone paper proposing staking for inference. Venice used Morpheus staking as a bootstrapping mechanism, anyone who staked got a free pro account, which made their airdrop civil resistant. They took a snapshot on December 31st and rewarded real stakers instead of bot farmers. Venice now has 1.5 million users and is the largest inference provider on the Morpheus router.
Could you talk about the origin story of Morpheus?
It's very Satoshi. The original authors called themselves Morpheus, Trinity, and Neo and sent the paper around in 2023 arguing that smart agents needed a real network, since almost nobody runs full nodes and most people globally only have cheap phones. I shared it with Eric Vorhees, who said decentralized intelligence is just as critical as decentralized money, and it snowballed from there with old Bitcoiners and Ethereum OGs joining in.
How did the team go about bootstrapping the network from zero to one?
I loved the fair launch idea, no premine, anyone could stake ETH non-custodially and the yield would buy up tokens on Uniswap. That removed the need for a treasury, grants, or governance. About three billion dollars of ETH has flowed through those contracts. Half the bought tokens are burned and half locked for 16 years, so supply keeps shrinking while a block reward still exists a thousand years from now.
What's something you find people don't know about the project?
Most people equate Morpheus with inference, but the community is contributing to major Ethereum AI standards, x402 for agent payments, MCP for agent to server communication, and ERC-8004 for agent identity registries. We've started calling the combination the Morpheus virtual machine, built on the EVM the same way the EVM let smart contracts run forever, this lets smart agents do the same.
Where does this all go, will AI and robotics merge with something like Morpheus?
I think AI and robotics definitely merge, and the key is not your keys, not your AI. People should individually hold the keys to their data, agents, and robots. Look at Ray Dalio's AI clone or Jesse Pollak's, both scaling their own conversations. I want a personal AI working for me 24/7, acting as a fiduciary, not manipulating me the way ad driven search results already do.
In an age of AI and robotic abundance, where does meaning come from, and does that tie into your faith?
I'm never shy about being a Christ follower, and it's given my life a lot of meaning and shaped my worldview since I was young, things like loving your neighbor and valuing life. I hope we ground new technology in those values. Societies that prioritize life and loving your neighbor tend to be the productive, lasting ones, while adversarial ones self implode over time.
