What was the biggest culture shock moving from NASA to the startup world?

In a big organization like NASA, having an entrepreneurial mindset and moving fast can get you into trouble, it did for me a couple times. You're discouraged from taking risks because the culture protects against downside. In a startup it's the opposite, you want to make as many mistakes as early as possible so you can learn fast. That's the biggest difference, going from a risk averse bureaucracy to an upside oriented environment.

How does a PhD background help a founder, and does academic rigor ever get in the way of fast decisions?

My PhD gave me the bandwidth to explore the NASA filter through research and experiments, and entrepreneurial programs at Rice taught me how to talk to customers and pitch. The scientific method helps you iterate toward success, and the communication skills I learned defending my research transferred directly to raising money and selling our product. The downside can be analysis paralysis and difficulty letting go of technical work, but overall it gave me a strong foundation for being a CEO.

What was the most complex technical problem you solved at NASA?

I was the first person in Oregon to receive a NASA space technology research fellowship, which led to a job there. I had to invent a new distillation method to purify drinking water from urine without ever touching surfaces, since urine fouls equipment and breeds bacteria. I ended up patenting the idea and got government funding for a proof of concept. It combined practical engineering with emerging science, which made it the hardest project I've done.

Was there a specific moment when you realized this technology needed to become a company?

It was more of a journey, but two moments stood out. The Department of Energy funded my PhD proposal built around using this NASA technology to cut air conditioning energy use, which told me it was a real problem worth pursuing. Then I entered a Rice startup competition with 84 teams at the last minute and won first place with a 35,000 dollar prize. Those two moments made me realize I'd be foolish not to quit my job and commit fully.

In plain English, what problem is Helix Earth solving better than anyone else?

Air conditioners spend a huge amount of energy just pulling humidity out of the air, sometimes 70 to 80 percent of total energy use in humid places like Houston. That technology hasn't changed in 60 years. We dry the air before it reaches the air conditioner so it runs more efficiently, and our system is five times smaller than any alternative, making it cheaper, easier to install, and a simple bolt on to existing commercial units.

How are you balancing the PhD's need for technical perfection with the startup mindset of shipping an MVP?

The scientific method actually mirrors startup thinking, you run simple experiments and build on them step by step rather than chasing perfection. We built prototypes at a tenth scale, then half scale, then full scale, optimizing along the way. You never reach a perfect product because everything is a compromise, but improving daily gets you to something great. Hiring experienced startup people also helped instill that mindset across the company and in me.

Why is now the best time for engineers and researchers to leave the lab and start a company?

I don't think there's ever a perfect time to do anything, but energy prices have been rising for years and are projected to keep climbing, especially outside the US. By 2050 cooling spaces will account for 8 percent of global CO2 emissions, more than aviation and passenger vehicles combined, as the developing world comes onto the energy grid and invests in comfort after food and healthcare. A hotter planet and rising heat deaths make cheaper, greener air conditioning urgent now.
