The questions, and the answers.

Where does your story begin, before Stanford and AI?

I'm a born and raised New Yorker who studied computer science and media technology at NYU. I moved to Northern California and started a video game and special effects software company, working with George Lucas and Industrial Light and Magic. In Marin County I befriended small farmers and fell into 16 years of researching eco-villages and intentional communities living sustainably in their own footprint.

What inspired your vision beyond your own research?

We stand on great shoulders. Rudolf Steiner was a turn of the century thinker about whole system circularity for farming, nature, and education. Buckminster Fuller influenced our generalist design thinking based on natural resource flows. Bill Mollison, the pillar of permaculture design, taught us how to let land speak about what it wants and is capable of.

What does a day in one of these communities actually feel like?

You wake up in a dignified passive home producing more energy than your family needs, then walk into a community designed around natural resource flow, producing its own food, clean water, and renewable energy. You smell fresh bread baking and coffee brewing, with farm-to-table moments that disarm stress. My research parallels blue zones where people live past 110 without ever seeing a doctor.

What do blue zones have that the rest of us are missing?

It starts with soil health, animals aerating and fertilizing soil, cover crops, no chemical interventions. People have soil microbes under their fingernails from gardening, cook food they're proud of, and live in multi-generational communities where you're not a pariah for having a baby or reaching a certain age. Elders are wisdom holders, and that's how people live healthier, happier lives.

How does AI and robotics fit into this vision?

We use generative AI to rapidly design land in a way that respects open space and suggests housing development in relationship to self-sustainable infrastructure. Once built, we map edge AI, tiny sensors creating neighborhood scale intelligence for resiliency, since cloud data centers are brittle. Low energy AI triggers the right robotics to mitigate risk, so AI is in our service, not dominating our power and water.

How do you encode empathy into an AI's objective function?

Our lens is on sustainability and resilience, compassion comes through action. When you create circumstances for healthier lifestyle, people feel safer, it lowers amygdala response and reduces cortisol release, both metrics of bad health and aging. Reducing those improves longevity and happy longevity, and these are the mechanisms we think to inject into AI models.

Are big AI companies taking this seriously enough?

OpenAI alone will spend $3 trillion on data centers in the next three years, which are industrial complexes requiring gigawatts of power and millions of gallons of water while creating emissions. We're suggesting 0.1% of that, about 3 billion dollars, to fund a network of these regenerative neighborhoods worldwide, especially in the Global South, as a hedge and new policy direction.

How do robotics deepen our connection to the world rather than distance us from it?

We're starting a collaboration with Nurture Robotics, founded by the former head of robotics research from Dyson in the UK, on a self-assembling robot system called Sammy that assembles itself based on the task at hand. Married with our Village OS software understanding full neighborhood needs, these systems become low cost assistance within 5 to 10 years, always in service to human and planetary health.
