Was bitcoin your singularity moment, the before and after event most people describe?

Not really. My singularity moment came about 15 to 16 years earlier during my PhD at the University of Illinois, when I got involved with Mosaic, the project that became Netscape. Marc Andreessen built it as an undergrad design project there. That was the first time I understood what it meant to bring communities together online, and it changed how I saw everything after.

What did you study back in Greece before coming to North America?

I studied computer science and computer engineering. I left in 1991 for my master's at the University of Southern California, then did my PhD at the University of Illinois. In 1999 I moved to Canada for the job at the University of Toronto, where I still work in computer engineering and computer science.

When did you first hear about bitcoin?

It was spring of 2010. I was back in Greece teaching a semester and read a small column, maybe six or seven paragraphs, in a Greek newspaper about this new currency called bitcoin. I did not pay much attention then. It was not until summer 2011 that I started talking with a colleague and reading more seriously.

How did Ethereum end up catching your imagination more than bitcoin?

Around 2013 I met Vitalik and started going to meetups. That was when I realized the decentralized mechanism behind bitcoin could do far more than validate transactions, it could execute programs. I started drawing parallels to BitTorrent, but on steroids, since Ethereum was functional and could run smart contracts in ways bitcoin's restricted language never could.

How did you first get your hands on the Ethereum whitepaper?

I downloaded a very early version, the whitepaper, in late November or early December 2013. I remember reading it on a train in Japan, the JR line, while flying out there that month. It was a shocking moment for me and stuck with me ever since, even though I think the team made some tactical mistakes rushing it out.

How did you eventually shift your university research entirely into this space?

My startup doing CAD tools for chip design closed around 2013, and I decided I did not want to keep playing my old songs, like Miles Davis never replaying his. Around 2015 I committed to redirecting my research at U of T completely. I published my first blockchain paper in 2018 and stopped hiring students for my old work entirely.
