What we talked about.

In this episode, Sunny Ray sits down with Juan Galt, a longtime bitcoin educator, journalist, and security consultant currently based in Baja California, Mexico, where he works alongside well known bitcoin trader Ugly Old Goat. Galt shares his personal journey from studying philosophy and psychology in Canada to buying bitcoin in 2012, losing his private keys after a laptop wipe, and eventually building a career as a bitcoin journalist for outlets like Bitcoin Magazine and CoinTelegraph. He discusses his current project, BeYourOwnVault.com, aimed at teaching people proper digital security and self custody practices. The conversation turns political as Galt warns that bitcoiners are too naive about regulatory threats like the travel rule and exchange level surveillance, and argues for both stronger privacy tools and active lobbying. He also weighs in on the Jack Dorsey versus Brian Armstrong debate over corporate political neutrality. Throughout, Galt reflects on lessons learned from lost coins, the difficulty of teaching security, and why he believes bitcoin represents a fundamental shift toward global good.

Juan Galt talks lost bitcoin, self custody security, and the political threats bitcoiners are ignoring.

The questions, and the answers.

Who is Juan Galt?

The name comes from the book Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, where John Galt is the primary character and Rand was a famous philosopher. I can neither confirm nor deny whether I was actually named after him, but it's practically the same thing, so does it really matter.

What's your story, where are you from and what haven't you shared before?

I was born in Colombia and moved to Canada as a teenager. I studied philosophy and psychology and wanted to be a therapist, but realized I didn't want to teach people to level up while being broke myself. Bitcoin was hitting a thousand dollars, so I pivoted entirely into it and became a journalist, writing for CoinFront, Bitcoin Magazine, CoinTelegraph, and NewsBTC, before starting my own YouTube channel.

What's the story behind the project you're most passionate about right now?

It's my consulting company, BeYourOwnVault.com, focused on bitcoin security and huddle tactics education. I bought bitcoin in 2012 at around seven dollars, got about eight coins, then lost the private keys when I reinstalled Windows and wiped my wallet file. That loss shaped my whole career, and now I'm trying to build a comprehensive way to teach people to secure their digital assets.

What are you learning about project management right now?

I'm taking a course because I'm very creative but not great at managing projects all the way through. It breaks things down from goals to objectives to strategies to actions, going from the highest abstractions to the lowest. I found a guy online named Mike Clayton who really crushes it teaching this stuff, and I've been applying it to help Ugly Old Goat organize his work.

What's one thing you believe to be true that most bitcoiners would disagree with?

I think bitcoiners are way too naive about politics. Regulators are pushing things like the travel rule to trap bitcoin liquidity inside exchanges, which could put us back where gold was in the 1930s when governments just confiscated it. We need to improve privacy tools like Wasabi, Samurai, JoinMarket, PayJoin, and Lightning, but we also need real lobbying, and I don't think enough people are doing that work right now.

What do you think of the Jack Dorsey versus Brian Armstrong debate over political neutrality?

I think Brian Armstrong did the right thing and played it masterfully. Cancel culture invading every part of life is bad for everybody. Jack Dorsey should be running a neutral platform right now, not tilting the scale politically, especially while he's being subpoenaed. Letting politicians and the public sort things out on their own is the better path.
