Can you share what Bioeconomy Solutions does?

We create carbon infrastructure for institutional capital. We take a long term view and see a tree not just for shade or beauty but as part of a carbon infrastructure network. We grow one of the fastest growing hardwoods, our carbon orchard, and turn it into many higher value carbon products.

What was the turning point that got the Megaflora tree project going?

My mentor Ray Allen, who passed away in 2020 from COVID complications, started in Fresno in the 90s wanting to create the most commercially viable Paulownia tree ever. He blended different strains into his own hybrid, the Megaflora, and eventually took the work to China, traveling back and forth some 60 times and planting millions of trees.

The US labels Paulownia a weed while Japan puts it on their passport and coins. When did you realize America had it backwards?

I was stationed in Japan in the Air Force and my wife asked me to move a dresser I assumed would be heavy. I picked it up easily by myself, it turned out to be Paulownia. America has always been open to new opportunities, but not commercially so, since exotic wood buyers still say they have never heard of Paulownia.

What was the hardest lesson you learned trying to get people to take this tree seriously?

Everyone is a PhD on Google, and Google shows the negative first, so Paulownia gets labeled invasive even though that only applies to one species out of 17 plus hybrids. I also learned there is an order to working with commercial harvesters and landowners, and after nine years I can say I earned my own PhD in figuring that out the hard way.

You created something called the Guardian Framework. Can you break that down?

Old growth forests take 50 to 100 years to mature, so we protect those by planting Paulownia, which matures in five to seven years and regrows from the stump, in degraded or desertified land instead. In places like Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi where households burn wood for cooking, this gives communities another energy option while sparing old growth forest.

How does Paulownia help with AI data centers and their emissions problem?

Data centers often run engines that emit carbon monoxide and other gases. We can plant Paulownia around the perimeter to absorb those emissions and filter the air while keeping down dust. Paulownia absorbs about 10 times more carbon dioxide than an oak tree and grows very fast, so at scale it changes the overall air quality around the facility.

Carbon credits have a trust problem, and Vera got exposed for questionable offsets. How does your model avoid that?

It comes down to transparency, traceability, and trust. We do not use brokers, we own the plantations directly, and we want cameras in the field so people can see real workers in real time. We also lean into biochar, which is scientifically proven to remain stable in soil for thousands of years, unlike less durable offset methods.

If everything goes right for Bioeconomy Solutions over the next five years, what does the world look like?

A lot greener, but this is not charity, it is nature based solutions that generate real revenue. We want to supply green carbon alternatives like biochar to industries such as steel, which increasingly uses electric arc furnaces, plus water filtration, agriculture, and animal feed. We plan a 26 site biochar network in the United States feeding multiple industries.
