What we talked about.

In this solo episode, host Sunny Ray reflects on the 13 years he has spent immersed in Bitcoin. He traces his path from an electrical engineering degree into a short lived career as a financial advisor, where he sold mutual funds while quietly wrestling with basic questions about money, inflation and why almost nobody, including bankers, could explain how money truly works. Frustrated, he stepped away from advising and took a sales job with a robotics company, eventually relocating to Bangalore, India. There, he encountered the Bitcoin white paper and early YouTube commentary, and became instantly captivated by its engineering, game theory, censorship resistance and Austrian economics roots. Sunny describes Bitcoin as arriving at the perfect moment, giving him purpose after years of feeling like he had missed earlier technological waves like the internet and smartphones. He closes by teasing a future episode about the meetups where he met his future Unocoin co-founders, inviting viewers to leave questions and comments.

Sunny Ray traces the 13 year personal journey that turned his confusion about money into an obsession with Bitcoin.

The questions, and the answers.

What is your background before getting into Bitcoin?

My background is electrical engineering. When I entered the real world and started working, I noticed there was always more month than money left over. That feeling pushed me to want to learn about money, so I got my life insurance and mortgage licenses and became an independent financial advisor selling mutual funds and tax strategies.

What questions came up for you while working as a financial advisor?

I kept having deep questions like what is inflation and why does the value of money keep going down every year, since that was something we were always fighting against for clients. Really most of my questions revolved around money itself, like what it is and why nobody had ever taught me its history.

What did you discover about how well people understand money?

I discovered that most people have no clue about money, they are basically just winging it. People spend a third of their lives in school preparing for work, get divorced over money and even go to war over it, yet almost nobody, including bankers, could clearly explain what money actually is.

Why did you leave the financial advising career?

It left a sour taste in my mouth realizing how little anyone actually understood money, including myself. I decided I wanted entrepreneurship long term but not right away, so I took a safer route and left, wanting to build sales skills first with something like training wheels before going fully independent.

How did you end up working in robotics and moving to India?

I put an intention out there that I wanted to work for a company selling robots to universities, and within two weeks I had an interview and got the job. I worked there for almost eight years as an academic solutions advisor, and around 2012 the company moved me to Bangalore, India.

How did you first come across Bitcoin?

While living in Bangalore I came across the Bitcoin white paper online and some early YouTube videos, including one from a creator called Da Vinci who was talking about Bitcoin when it was worth about a dollar. I was already deep into Ron Paul and gold, and Bitcoin hit me at exactly the right time.

What made you fall so deeply in love with Bitcoin?

Everything about it felt intoxicating, the distributed network, censorship resistance, open source design and the Austrian economics and libertarian ideas behind it. I had watched the internet and smartphones create huge opportunities I missed, and Bitcoin felt like the thing I had been searching for, so I studied it obsessively, sometimes barely sleeping.

What did discovering Bitcoin teach you about money itself?

I learned more about money by studying Bitcoin than from anything else in my life. It showed me that scarcity in money leads to abundance in reality, while abundance in money leads to scarcity in reality, and that realization amazed me and gave me a real sense of purpose.
