What we talked about.

In this episode of the Sunny Ray Show, Max Keiser joins host Sunny Ray to trace his path from Wall Street stockbroker in 1982 to co founder of the Hollywood Stock Exchange, where he built patented technology for creating digital scarcity through a virtual currency and price discovery engine years before bitcoin existed. Keiser explains how the Hollywood Stock Exchange grew to a million users before being acquired by Cantor Fitzgerald just months before 9/11 wiped it out. He describes being introduced to bitcoin in 2011 and instantly recognizing it as digital gold, the first technology to achieve absolute, decentralized scarcity, something gold and earlier virtual currencies could never fully deliver. The conversation covers the 2017 block size wars, why gold's supply is not truly finite, and how bitcoin improves on gold's portability and divisibility. Keiser also touches on the newly launched Orange Pill Podcast with Stacy Herbert. Throughout, he frames bitcoin as a civilizational shift away from fiat money toward scarcity, sustainability and community.

Max Keiser traces his Wall Street to Hollywood Stock Exchange journey and explains why bitcoin achieved true digital scarcity where nothing else could.

The questions, and the answers.

Can you share your backstory, where you're from and how you got into economics and markets?

I started on Wall Street in 1982 after NYU, working as a stockbroker for years studying price discovery. In the mid 1990s I co-founded the Hollywood Stock Exchange, inventing virtual currency and box office futures trading, which gave me a patent on creating digital scarcity long before bitcoin existed.

How did you first get introduced to bitcoin?

We had been doing Kaiser Report for a couple of years focusing on gold and heterodox economics. In 2011, John Matonis came on the show and introduced us to bitcoin. I immediately saw it as gold 2.0, digital gold, solving the digital scarcity problem I had worked on with the Hollywood Stock Exchange.

What ultimately happened with the Hollywood Stock Exchange?

We built a huge virtual market that reached a million users within a year, the most traded exchange in the world by volume. We were about to go public with Bear Stearns in 2001, then Cantor Fitzgerald bought us out and moved everything to the top floor of the World Trade Center. Three months later was 9/11 and they got wiped out.

What made bitcoin succeed at digital scarcity where earlier attempts like game items or Linden dollars failed?

Bitcoin combined absolute scarcity, a 21 million coin limit, with full decentralization and distribution. Earlier attempts like magic swords or Linden dollars had relative, centralized scarcity you could not fully trust or use outside the game. Bitcoin's 2008 white paper was the first time a digitally scarce currency could be used as real money outside any platform.

How does bitcoin compare to gold as a form of money?

Gold supply inflates about two percent a year through mining, and that could rise with better technology, sea mining, or asteroid mining, so it is not absolutely scarce. Bitcoin does everything gold does but better. It is more portable, more divisible, and absolutely scarce, so it is essentially gold 2.0 for a connected digital world.

What's the significance of the 2017 block size war?

The block size war in 2017 was probably the final major chapter before bitcoin ran away with the market. Michael Saylor said watching that fight convinced him bitcoin was real and had gone through the fire, which is part of why he later bought hundreds of millions of dollars worth for MicroStrategy.

Anything new going on before we jump in?

We just launched the Orange Pill Podcast a few weeks ago with Stacy and it is already burning up the podcasting charts. We do a weekly show on Sundays plus a live stream during the week called the microdosing of the orange pill, and I expect we will surpass Joe Rogan in a couple of weeks.
