In this episode Sunny Ray sits down with Brekkie Von Bitcoin, Creative Director at Swan Bitcoin, to trace an unusual path into the industry. Brekkie describes growing up in South Florida, studying Russian and international relations after being inspired by his grandfather's business dealings in Moscow, and later attending film school in Los Angeles. Disillusioned by consumerism in Russia and the film industry's ties to soft power, he shifted focus toward storytelling that could change minds. He recounts buying bitcoin in 2013 before a trip to Russia, becoming a hodler almost by accident, and later going viral making parody Rick and Morty videos mocking crypto scammers under the persona Brekkie Von Bitcoin. After discovering Tales from the Crypt podcast and The Bitcoin Standard, he committed fully to bitcoin, working at Tantra Labs and advising Give Bitcoin before joining Swan Bitcoin. The conversation explores propaganda as a neutral tool, bitcoin art versus crypto art, and why Swan's mission-driven culture resonated with his belief that personal success should serve bitcoin's broader adoption.
From Moscow internships to Rick and Morty parodies, Swan Bitcoin's creative director shares his winding path into bitcoin.
What's your story, and what was your lens coming into bitcoin?
I grew up in South Florida, inspired by my grandfather's business success in Russia. I studied Russian and international relations, planning to work internationally. After interning in Moscow I was disgusted by rampant materialism there, which sent me searching for meaning. I turned to movies, wrote my thesis on film propaganda, and eventually went to film school in Los Angeles.
What does the word propaganda actually mean to you?
To me propaganda is just a tool, not inherently good or bad. I realized Hollywood is deeply intertwined with the military industrial complex, using free equipment in exchange for favorable portrayals, which functions as American soft power. Effective propaganda has to be entertaining, you can't just preach at people, you have to draw them in first.
Where did your story go next after film school?
I realized making movies was incredibly difficult and not very effective for the impact I wanted. Around 2016 to 2017 I got bitten by bitcoin again after first buying in 2013. I started making parody videos mocking crypto scammers on Instagram, which grew into the Brekkie Von Bitcoin persona, originally performed in a fake German accent.
You bought bitcoin at the top in 2013 and the price crashed. How did you end up hodling?
I bought two bitcoins in 2013 for a little over a thousand dollars each, and the price dropped to around three hundred. I thought about selling but realized that didn't make sense, so I just held on. I didn't even know the word hodler at the time.
What was it about Corey's pitch on Swan, and what initially caught your attention about bitcoin?
Bitcoin represents pure freedom and personal sovereignty to me, tied to my views on patriotism and individual rights. After losing money yoloing into shitcoins in 2017, I realized I wasn't cut out to be a trader and started manually dollar cost averaging. When Corey pitched Swan as the easiest way to automate DCA, I knew it was a product I needed.
How did you arrive at the realization that DCA and self custody is the most important thing?
It came from personal experience losing money trading shitcoins in 2017 and realizing successful trading requires full time focus I couldn't give. I started DCAing manually with reminders I'd often forget, so when Swan's mission to automate that process was pitched to me, it clicked immediately as the product and philosophy I believed in.
Are you the creative genius behind the Swan Bitcoin YouTube channel?
It's a team effort in a lot of ways. Swan Sea was Brady's baby and has grown into its own thing. I host our Swan Lounge show, which is more of a hangout discussing the week's events, and we've done it both on YouTube and Clubhouse.
