What we talked about.

Brian, the operations force behind San Diego's top producing Baron team at Real Brokerage, joins Sunny Ray to trace an unlikely path from Midwest soccer standout to Merchant Marine Academy graduate, Navy reserve officer, and real estate powerhouse. Brian explains how discipline learned playing competitive soccer and grinding through the Academy, where he became a Division One rugby player, shaped a mindset built on consistency and contingency planning. After graduating and working as a merchant mariner and naval officer running the Surge Main shipyard program, he channeled his earnings into real estate, living frugally, even in hostels and tents, to buy a property every year. Partnering with Emma in 2016, he applied logistics and systems thinking to grow the Baron team from 40 transactions a year to over 250, eventually into the top 10 percent of agents in Southern California. Now stepped back from daily operations, Brian focuses full time on integrating artificial intelligence into real estate workflows, building autonomous systems in a parallel business while still supporting the Baron team and closing deals differently than before.

A Merchant Marine turned Navy officer became a systems-driven real estate operator now pioneering AI-powered brokerage workflows.

The questions, and the answers.

Tell us about the Baron team.

I've run the Baron team with Emma for about eight or nine years, growing it from 40 to 50 transactions a year up to 250 plus, dominating San Diego. This past year I stepped back from operations to focus fully on implementing AI to solve problems realtors typically don't address, streamlining our backend systems while staying a licensed realtor on the team.

How did a Midwest kid end up at the Merchant Marine Academy?

I was recruited for soccer by several schools and dismissed the Academy at first, but my mom pushed me to look closer. It's the highest paying industry for new grads, offers 100 percent job placement, and you travel to about 21 countries before graduation at no extra cost. I visited and was all in, though I ended up playing D1 rugby instead of soccer because the academics were too demanding.

What got you through King's Point?

Consistency and the belief that failure is not an option, something I say every day. I knew I wanted to make as much money as possible right after graduation to invest in real estate, so I had to push through the academy and get licensed to work on these thousand foot ships as a civilian mariner.

How did the military and merchant marine training shape how you work today?

It's all about contingency planning. My brain is constantly asking what happens if this doesn't work, so we can forecast problems and minimize pivoting. That mindset helped us during COVID when we started doing Zoom open houses months before other realtors, because being out on a ship in the middle of the ocean teaches you to pre-plan, execute, and adapt.

How did a naval officer end up selling houses?

I wanted to work high paying jobs and invest nearly every penny into real estate, buying at least one property a year. I was essentially homeless for seven years, living in hostels, tents, and on ships, to fund it. Eventually those tenants paid all my bills and the properties appreciated, which pulled me fully into real estate.

You've said most agents chase deals, but you built systems instead. When did that click?

That started on day one. I've never chased deals and still don't. If you build the right systems, branding, marketing, followup, and a strong CRM, deals come to you instead. Sometimes people just call and say list our house, send the contract, we'll send photos, because the flywheel is already working.

What does the Baron team run on today?

Emma leads the team with two full time admins, seven virtual assistants, and usually 10 to 15 agents doing at least a deal a month. Over the last year I've been building AI driven systems and semi autonomous workflows, testing full autonomy in a parallel business with no branding, just to prove the concept works in real estate.
