What we talked about.

In this episode of the Sunny Ray Show, host Sunny Ray talks with John Balkam of Sovereign, a company he describes as the Geek Squad for Bitcoin. Balkam traces his path from sports marketing, including the book Three Win Sponsorship, Third Win Group, and Georgetown's Hoyas Rising NIL collective, to a worldview shift after reading The Bitcoin Standard. He explains his idea of a life economy as the counter to what John Perkins calls the death economy, built on courage, sound money, abundance, and collaboration. The conversation covers why people tune out Bitcoin jargon but respond to cost of living pain, why self-custody is an ongoing defense rather than a set it and forget it task, and how advising families differs from advising companies, especially around inheritance. Balkam also predicts it will take two or three generations for Bitcoin custody to feel as ordinary as opening a bank account, and closes by arguing that having your own vision for your life matters more than any tool, Bitcoin included.

A former sports marketer explains why Bitcoin self-custody is ongoing defense, and why owning your own life vision is the bigger prize.

The questions, and the answers.

What is Sovereign and what problem are you solving?

We're building essentially the Geek Squad for Bitcoin. In the 90s people were intimidated by personal computers, and Geek Squad helped them adjust. Bitcoin is still advanced technology in the 2020s, so Sovereign acts as educator, tech support, and strategist for individuals, families, and companies who want to onboard.

What does your sports marketing background carry into how you talk about money now?

My lens was win-win-win business: corporate partnerships that also give back to the community. That became my book Three Win Sponsorship and my agency Third Win Group. I kept asking how to create valuable transactions that also build up people you wouldn't normally consider, and that thread runs into Bitcoin.

What pulled you toward Bitcoin specifically?

Around 2022 I read Saifedean Ammous's The Bitcoin Standard, and my worldview moved about 180 degrees. My business partner and I both got orange pilled, started stacking Bitcoin personally and for our agency, and I kept learning until I wanted to spend all my time on it instead of sports marketing.

What does life economy mean?

John Perkins' Confessions of an Economic Hit Man describes a death economy built on fear, debt, anxiety over insufficiency, and divide and conquer. A life economy flips that: courage, sound money, security through abundance, and connect and collaborate. Bitcoin is the start, not the whole picture, of fighting back.

When does Bitcoin stop being abstract for someone?

When we talk about the problem first. Burritos cost 20 dollars, studio rent is 2,000 a month, and fiat purchasing power has eroded fast since 2020. People feel that loss. If I lead with the 21 million cap, they tune out. Once they feel the problem, they open up to Bitcoin.

What custody mistake do careful people make repeatedly?

The set it and forget it approach. I see self-custody like owning a gun: it only helps if you keep it yours and keep hardening it. You are constantly under attack whether you know it or not. You can become sovereign, but the question is whether you can stay sovereign for decades.

What is different about advising a family versus a company?

Inheritance. If one person holds the keys, what happens when they pass away? Companies plan succession routinely, but few firms can help a family move coins to the next generation strategically without relying too much on outside institutions. Those projects take real time with the client.

What does sovereignty over thoughts and actions look like in five years?

If you don't have a vision for your own life, you default to someone else's, whether the government, a corporation, or even your family. Bitcoin is a catalyst to ask what your own vision is and align your thoughts, words, and actions to deliver it. Bitcoin is just a tool to get there.
