In this solo, camera-facing episode, Bitcoin advocate Sunny Ray, founder of Unocoin, breaks from his usual interview format to react to major Bitcoin news. He unpacks Jack Dorsey's public reflection on banning Donald Trump from Twitter and Dorsey's push toward decentralized platforms like Blue Sky and Mastodon. He highlights Elon Musk changing his Twitter bio to simply Bitcoin, calling it a milestone alongside Dorsey's advocacy. Ray also discusses the WallStreetBets and GameStop saga, Robinhood's trading restrictions, and how it is waking younger people up to a rigged financial system. He references Ray Dalio's essay on Bitcoin and an old Eric Schmidt quote praising Bitcoin's cryptographic achievement. Ray shares excitement about Clubhouse as a tool for community meetups, and closes with a personal note on India's Supreme Court striking down the RBI banking ban, a case tied to his own company Unocoin, while warning against a proposed bill to ban private cryptocurrencies in India.
Sunny Ray goes solo to break down Jack Dorsey, Elon Musk, Blue Sky, WallStreetBets, and Bitcoin's decentralized future.
What did Jack Dorsey say about banning Donald Trump from Twitter?
I do not celebrate or feel pride in having to ban Donald Trump from Twitter or how we got here. After a clear warning, we took this action based on threats to physical safety. A ban is a failure of ours to promote healthy conversation. It fragments public discourse and sets a dangerous precedent for how much power a single company can have over global speech.
Why does this moment matter for Bitcoin and decentralization?
The reason I have so much passion for Bitcoin is largely because of the model it demonstrates, a foundational internet technology that is not controlled or influenced by any single individual or entity. This is what the internet wants to be, and over time more of it will be. That is huge, and people need to let that settle in.
What is Blue Sky and how does it connect to Bitcoin's ethos?
Blue Sky is the project Twitter is spearheading to build an open, decentralized version of social media, funding a small independent team of open source architects and engineers. Twitter wants to eventually be just a client of that standard. The platform that has really captured my imagination so far is Mastodon, and there is even a Bitcoin flavored instance of it built by the Cold Card guys.
What just happened with Elon Musk on Twitter?
The wealthiest man on earth just put Bitcoin in his profile, just like Jack Dorsey. Those are two of the most prolific and impactful people on earth, and now their handles are literally just one word, Bitcoin. That is beautiful. I have been telling everybody about Bitcoin since 2011, and this feels like a huge validating moment.
Can you explain the WallStreetBets and GameStop situation?
A hedge fund was shorting GameStop, and a bunch of Reddit users got together and figured out how to stick it to the hedge fund. Robinhood ended up restricting trading on GameStop and even crypto for a bit, and it turns out there may be a connection between them and the hedge fund. People are waking up to the fact that the whole system feels rigged against the little guy.
What happened with the Supreme Court of India and the RBI banking ban?
The Supreme Court of India struck off the Reserve Bank of India's banking ban against crypto, ruling the 2018 circular unconstitutional. My company Unocoin was central to this fight, along with my co-founders Harish and Sathvik. It was a tumultuous, scary two year battle, but we took the RBI to the Supreme Court and won.
What is your reaction to India's plan to introduce a bill banning private cryptocurrencies?
The government is planning to introduce a bill to ban all private cryptocurrencies and launch its own CBDC, which is bearish. I do not think this is positive for India. The government should represent the people, and if the people want Bitcoin, they should be able to have it. Our Unicoin situation proved you can win if you fight.
Why did you start doing this interview show, and what is your goal with it?
Bitcoin is nothing more than ones and zeros, it is really the people behind Bitcoin that give it life and purpose. My goal with the show is to put a spotlight on that vibrant community, capturing the ethos of being open, friendly, and intellectually curious, even with guests who are not hardcore Bitcoiners.
