Sunny Ray talks with Karin Stephan of Sidekick Platform about why human expertise still matters as AI reshapes how people find answers. Stephan explains that Sidekick turns an expert's body of work, including podcasts, books, talks, and videos, into a conversational channel that answers questions from that material and links back to the exact timestamp. She describes the Iron Man suit idea of using AI to augment people, and shares how her earlier startup Earkick, focused on mental health and AI, led her to this mission. The conversation covers serving both audiences and creators, why experts should own their knowledge and the value it generates rather than being absorbed into a large language model, and why human oversight matters most for high-stakes topics such as health, finance, and parenting. Stephan points to use cases with veterans in transition and psychedelic wellness, outlines how new partners get started, and names the creators she hopes to hear from. She closes with her vision of trusted knowledge becoming the new normal.
Karin Stephan explains how Sidekick lets experts own their knowledge and turn it into a trusted conversational channel in the age of AI.
What is Sidekick Platform building, and what problem does it solve?
We make intelligence people trust accessible. Sidekick turns an expert's body of work, like podcasts, books, talks, and videos, into a conversational channel on their own website or wherever they choose. People ask questions, get answers grounded in that work, and follow sources to the relevant timestamp to verify them.
Why did you choose Sidekick out of every company you could have joined?
The Iron Man suit concept resonated with me immediately: using AI to augment human capabilities. After exiting my previous startup, Earkick, which focused on mental health and AI, Sidekick felt like the logical next mission. I'm also an incurable podcast addict, so I personally want to ask questions of everything I listen to and read.
What is different about growing a platform built on expert knowledge?
You serve two sides. One needs knowledge they can understand and trust. The other is the expert creator, who needs a reason to keep producing valuable work. Sidekick is the infrastructure connecting them directly, so the creator owns their expertise and the value it generates, without an intermediary taking a share or their work being sucked into an LLM.
When does human oversight matter most when AI delivers advice?
It matters less for the best pizza in town, but a lot for high-stakes topics like health, career, finance, parenting, and relationships. Experts decide which sources belong in a channel, where answers should stop, and what nuance to add. Sidekick grounds answers in that curated material, with no web access, and points back to sources so people can verify.
When did you see Sidekick change something real for a user?
There is a well-documented case with veterans moving from active duty to civilian life. They got conversational information that encouraged a right next first step, covering the benefits they needed to understand and claim. In psychedelic wellness, women could ask questions they might not ask a person, explore interviews with leading scientists, and make educated decisions.
Who should reach out to you this week?
I'm looking for US-based podcasters, expert creators, journalists, and videographers with years of material and an audience that keeps asking similar questions. If you want to earn from the value you've already created, Sidekick gives you the infrastructure to build an alternative to being just an ingredient in someone else's LLM.
What happens when a creator becomes a partner?
We start with a specific use case and monetization in mind. Then we agree on a sample of the body of work, build a channel with part of it, and test it. After that we invite the audience. Creators can brand the channel however they like and place it on YouTube, Spotify, a newsletter, LinkedIn, or an email signature.
What does Sidekick look like in five years?
I want it to be the new normal, the natural way to provide and access intelligence people can trust. You explore an expert's work through conversation, keep building understanding, and the expert keeps a direct connection with the people who need their knowledge. I think it will happen even sooner than five years, democratizing how we access and augment expertise.
