What we talked about.

In this episode, Sunny Ray sits down with Alex, founder of Amber and author of The Rise of the Individual, to trace the winding path that led him to bitcoin. Alex opens up about his immigrant upbringing in Australia, a demanding father who instilled a relentless drive for excellence, and an uncle who planted seeds of purpose beyond personal success. He recounts turning a few thousand dollars into fifty thousand trading options as a teenager, only to lose everything and end up two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in debt right before his twentieth birthday. Alex describes clawing his way back through grueling door to door sales, living on four cans of tuna a day, before building a sales company, a renewable energy business, and later tech startups. A painful lesson with government subsidies deepened his skepticism of state intervention. By 2016, all these formative experiences converged when he rediscovered bitcoin, which became his mission and the foundation for Amber, his bitcoin focused company.

From a $250K debt spiral and door-to-door sales to founding Amber, Alex's redemption arc runs straight through bitcoin.

The questions, and the answers.

Where does your story begin?

It really begins with my dad, a tough immigrant who pushed academic and athletic excellence hard, even violently at times, drilling into us that we can't be just another number. Later, in my mid teens, I moved in with my uncle, a philosopher and anti establishment thinker who planted seeds of purpose and greatness beyond personal success. Those two influences, excellence from my dad and mission from my uncle, shaped everything that came after.

What happened when you started trading in university?

I took my scholarship money instead of paying for textbooks and put it into options and warrants, turning three or four grand into almost fifty thousand dollars. I thought I was a genius and would be a millionaire by twenty. Then right before my birthday in 2007, the market crashed, my leveraged positions got wiped out, and I panicked and leveraged up further using family assets. Within five or six months I was about two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in debt.

How did you dig yourself out of that hole?

I had to leave university and get money fast, so I started door to door sales for pay television, a job I hated and wasn't suited for since I'm actually introverted by nature. I rationed four cans of tuna a day, only eating after I made a sale, and spent nights studying markets and economics trying to understand where I'd gone wrong. That commission only grind taught me there are no guarantees in life.

What did you build after that period?

I developed my own communication style at the door, inspired by people like Tony Robbins and Richard Bandler, and became one of the best sellers in the country, closing four out of twenty doors versus the average of one in a hundred. I eventually founded my own sales company with a partner, then moved into renewable energy, which became my first real million dollar success around 2011 or 2012.

What happened with your solar business and the government rebates?

The government offered rebates tied to renewable energy certificates to stimulate the solar industry, but they ran out of funding in about eight months instead of the planned five years. That flooded the market, crashed certificate prices by fifty to seventy percent, and meant our business actually lost money on jobs we thought were profitable. It taught me never to build a business dependent on government intervention, even well intentioned programs get royally mishandled.

How did bitcoin come onto your radar and lead to Amber?

I'd first heard about bitcoin years earlier during the gold and silver bull run, maybe from Max Keiser, when it was still in the double digits. I saw it again around five or six hundred dollars and started digging deeper. Everything I'd been through, the drive for excellence, the resilience from going broke, the skepticism of institutions, aligned with what bitcoin represented, and it became my mission, eventually leading me to found Amber.
