What we talked about.

In this episode of the Sunny Ray Show, host Sunny Ray talks with Shane Mahi of RevIntel about the gap between a booked meeting and a real sales opportunity. Shane, who celebrates his 40th birthday during the recording, explains how his years running an outsourced sales development agency exposed a recurring mismatch between what agencies call an opportunity and what clients count as one. RevIntel is the software he wished he had, built to give agencies evidence that their activity leads to revenue, tracking deals through each stage without needing access to the client CRM. Shane covers the buying signals his team watches, including hiring patterns, funding rounds, and contract renewal windows, and explains why private executive dinners can outperform Zoom calls and trade shows. He compares UK and US buyer and founder culture, describes how his agency moved to commission-based pricing, and discusses sourcing lead data from multiple databases and public platforms. The conversation closes on how AI agents are reshaping both team building and B2B selling.

Shane Mahi explains why a booked meeting proves nothing, and how tracking deals from first call to closed revenue changes what agencies deliver.

The questions, and the answers.

What problem is RevIntel solving?

RevIntel is the software I wished I had six years ago running my agency. Agencies and customers define an opportunity differently, and proving that gap is hard. RevIntel gives agencies evidence that the activities and KPIs they measure actually lead to money for the client's business.

What did you get wrong in your appointment setting company that RevIntel fixes?

I did work just to book meetings. The meetings would happen with the right title, company, and revenue, but nothing came of them. With RevIntel, when we put an opportunity into a client's CRM as a live deal, we show how it progresses at every stage, without having to ask the client.

Why tie your fees to the deals your clients win?

Because that is what clients are paying for. Like a slot machine, they pull the lever and want to see money come out. Agencies get cut if they do not produce results within a deal cycle, so we wanted meetings that end in real deal cycles. We also earn commission on bigger deals.

Which buying signals matter most to you?

We group signals into what we call hunt groups. Hiring signals matter, like VPs of sales or marketing, AEs, or SDRs. Funding matters too, such as seed or Series A. We also look at when a company last bought a solution, since contracts often come up for renewal every two to three years.

Why private dinners? What happens in that room that does not happen on Zoom?

Buying committees at big enterprises are hard to reach by phone. At a private dinner, one sponsor hosts 15 to 20 carefully chosen executives for around three hours. You have real conversations over dinner and networking time afterward. We found roughly 25 to 30 percent of that audience converted into real pipeline.

What do UK and US buyers do differently?

I grew up in the UK, lived in New Jersey for 15 years, then moved back in 2014. In my opinion Americans are more open, more resilient, and more welcoming of outreach. The UK felt more reserved, with less entrepreneurial energy. I lean toward the American mindset.

How do your clients see proof of what worked?

They can see the full path from contact to contract: what was said, and whether email, phone, or LinkedIn worked. Meetings come with a predefined agenda tailored to the buyer's problems. One key metric for us is whether the first meeting converts to a second meeting.

How do you source leads for customers?

It is a mix of databases, plus public platforms like LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Reddit, and press releases. We layer insights together. Our approach is quality over volume, so rather than calling 10,000 leads, we aim for around 2,000 with about half converting.
