the two things left
disney just gave openai a billion dollars and access to 200 characters.
soon, anyone can generate a video starring mickey mouse. the machine does the work.
so what’s left for you?
two things.
taste. and agency.
ai can generate endlessly. remix, recombine, produce at scale.
what it can’t do is choose.
it can’t say “this matters” and mean it.
it can’t wake up obsessed with an idea.
it can’t refuse.
taste is knowing what to make when you could make anything.
agency is making it anyway, even when no one asked.
i’ve seen this before. internet. smartphones. social media. bitcoin.
every wave scares people. every wave proves the same thing.
the tools change. the humans matter more.
the robot can paint, but it doesn’t know what’s worth painting.
the algorithm can write, but it doesn’t know what’s worth saying.
the machine can calculate, but it cannot care.
here’s the shift no one talks about.
when generation is infinite, curation becomes the art.
the question isn’t “can you make it?”
it’s “should you?”
and then, “will you?”
that’s taste.
that’s agency.
that’s what’s left.
and it’s everything.
