openai's number moved by $20 billion and your forecast will too

a forecast is a story about the future, a rule is a promise you keep before the future shows up.

so the number everyone was quoting for openai was off by about $20 billion.

the financial times reported yesterday that openai told investors its annualized revenue is approaching $50 billion. the figure going around a couple weeks ago was closer to $70 billion. same company, same year, two ways of counting.

everyone's arguing about who got the math wrong. i think they're missing the lesson.

a forecast is a story you tell about the future. a rule is a promise you make to yourself before the future shows up.

i interviewed a money manager this week who has been in markets for forty years. back in the nineties, before there was a spreadsheet on his desk, he started writing his rules down. pen and paper. then he followed them when every instinct in his body said not to.

one of his first rules was simple. insiders sell their own stock for a hundred reasons. they buy it for one.

now his firm runs those rules through ai at a scale he couldn't have dreamed of. and he still won't hand the model the final call. a human audits every decision. his line was "it's not man versus machine, it's man and machine."

here's where it gets practical for you.

before we went live he connected his personal profile to the stream instead of the company page. the lift on a personal profile is roughly 20x. a rule, not a hunch.... people follow people

most founders run their pipeline on forecasts. we'll close three this quarter. the raise will come together by spring. that's a weather report.

the founders who win run it on rules. how many new conversations a day. how fast every reply gets an answer. what happens on day three, day seven, day twenty one when someone goes quiet. written down before the month starts, followed when the month gets ugly.

think of it like brushing your teeth. nobody forecasts their dental health. you do the thing twice a day and the outcome takes care of itself.

i run my own week this way. around 30 conversations a day, every day, because the rule says so, not because i feel like it.

if you want the rules, the tools and the people to run them with you, here's the three ways we work together. no promises about outcomes.... a system you own and relationships that stay yours.

long term the forecast always gets revised. the rule compounds.

so what rule did you break this week because your gut told you to?
