sales tank round two: what changes when you roleplay the losing side

making founders play the skeptical prospect instead of the pitcher taught them more than another round of pitching ever could.

we changed up a recent sales roleplay session by flipping the usual format: instead of founders practicing their pitch again, we had them play the skeptical prospect on the other side of the table. the shift in understanding was immediate and obvious on everyone's face.

playing the skeptic forces you to notice things you never catch while you're the one pitching. you notice how much of the pitch is actually about the pitcher's excitement rather than the listener's problem. you notice how quickly you tune out generic claims and how much attention a specific, relevant detail actually earns. you notice how irritating it is when someone doesn't actually answer your objection but just restates their value proposition louder.

founders who went through this exercise came back to their own pitch noticeably sharper, not because anyone told them what to fix, but because they'd just spent thirty minutes experiencing exactly what their own prospects experience every single day. that kind of insight doesn't transfer well through advice, it transfers through experience.

this is a cheap exercise that most teams never run because it feels less productive than practicing the actual pitch again. it's usually the opposite, the roleplay from the other side teaches things that repetition from your own side never will.

if you sat on the other side of your own pitch today, as the skeptical prospect, what would irritate you most about how it's delivered?
