you're selling bicycles at a gas station
when every investor in the room already bet on more compute, the contrarian founder doesn't need a better deck... they need a different room.
microsoft showed off its new ai chip this morning... maia 300. the claim is 40% more tokens per megawatt than the best gpu racks, with gigawatt scale rollouts starting next year.
read that again. the biggest companies on earth are racing to squeeze more answers out of every watt. the whole market is pricing ai as a power plant problem.
now picture you're the founder building the opposite bet.
i was on a call today with two founders doing that. their pitch is ai that learns more like a person does... no giant data center, no ocean of compute, no power bill the size of a small town. smart people. real tech.
and the raise is crawling. not because the idea is weak. because most of the investors they meet have already placed their chips on the other side of the table, and they're waiting for those bets to cash out before they look up.
everyone thinks a contrarian round stalls because the thesis is early. it's not the thesis. it's the room.
pitching a no data center ai to a fund that wrote its checks into data centers is like selling bicycles at a gas station. the people in line aren't stupid. they filled the tank an hour ago.
so you don't need a better deck. you need a different line of people.
these founders already know half of this. they told me the traditional vc path feels like the wrong fit, and they want family offices and investors who like being early and alone. good instinct. the catch is they've had maybe a dozen or two one on one conversations so far. that's not a fundraise... that's a sample.
contrarian money exists. its scattered. it doesn't sit in one fund you can email on a tuesday. you find it by talking to hundreds of people and letting the few who light up raise their hand.
that's the part i care about. outreach that puts you in front of hundreds of the right people, run as technology and a service you own... your domains, your relationships, your calls. i wrote down how we set it up on the raasrocket page. nobody can promise you who says yes. that part is on you and the idea.
long term this is the whole game. when the herd goes all in on one shape of the future, the money that backs the other shape gets scarce... and the founders who find it first get to set the terms.
microsoft is betting on more tokens per watt. you might be betting on needing fewer watts at all.
so who are you pitching... the people who already bought the gas, or the people still looking for a ride?
