a robot walked off the line and nobody looked at the last ten feet

the volume was never the hard part, the last ten feet were.

a humanoid robot walked off a production line this week. by itself.

not carried off, not wheeled out on a cart.... it stood up and walked.

the line that built it runs past eighty percent automation, borrowed from a car plant, and mass production is promised by year end.

everyone read that as a story about jobs. i read it as a story about the last ten feet.

tuesday morning a founder walked me through his outbound numbers before most of you were awake. thirty six hundred cold emails in thirty days. seventy six replies. six real opportunities.

and then one deal for every ten conversations. he called that "not too good" before i could say a word.

so his line works. the machine at the top of his funnel is humming and he is apologising for the end of it.

here is the flip everyone misses.

you can automate the whole assembly line and still hand the finished thing to one tired guy with a spray can at the door.

the volume was never the hard part. i know this because i ran 121,811 sends through my own fleet and got 139 replies back. the pipes were clean. two bounces out of a hundred and twenty one thousand. the message was the problem, and no amount of throughput fixes a message.

robots coming off a line at car plant quality is the same lesson pointed at manufacturing. the wonder is not that it walks. the wonder is that somebody spent years deciding what it should be before they built one line to make ten thousand of them.

founders do it backwards. they build the volume first and decide what they are saying somewhere around email nine hundred.

your fix is not more sends. your fix is knowing who you are talking to, narrow enough that you could name them, and then knowing what happens in the ten minutes after they say yes.

that founder went narrow on his list and got a two percent reply rate out of cold mail. two percent. most people would sell a kidney for that. he is still losing nine of ten at the table.

we run the technology and the service behind the sending. the client holds every relationship, every conversation, every close. no guarantees, no promises about outcomes, becuase the ten feet at the end belong to you.

if you want the engine part, it lives at gtm ventures.

the robot walked because a thousand small decisions were made before the line ever switched on.

so what did you decide before you turned yours on?
