the loyalty your cap table can't buy
investors can split their bets now... the founder nobody wants to bet against is the only hedge left.
benchmark's partners got on stage at disrupt this week and said out loud what most vcs only admit over drinks. the old rule that you don't back two companies fighting for the same customer is cracking.
one partner called it kryptonite. another said cheap software makes founders more ambitious, so everyone keeps wandering into each other's lanes. the biggest ai labs already share dozens of the same investors.
so here's the uncomfortable part.... the check in your bank account doesn't buy loyalty anymore. your lead could be sitting on your rival's board by next year.
everyone thinks the answer is a tighter term sheet. more information rights, a side letter, a lawyer who reads every line.
i think the answer is you. the founder nobody wants to bet against.
i heard what that looks like on a call today. a payments founder told me how he landed his first merchant. the cto on the other side wanted customers paying in the company's own token. most founders would nod, take the deal, sort it out later. he told the guy straight that it was a bad idea. used a stronger word than that.
the cto respected it. a few days later the referral came in.
think about that. he didn't win by agreeing. he won by being the one person in the room who cared more about the customer's outcome than his own close.
it's like a good mechanic. the one who tells you the part you asked for won't fix the noise is the one you send your whole family to. the one who sells you the part loses you the day it rattles again.
same founder bootstrapped for three years before raising. investors kept asking how one company could run so many products. he stopped apologising and turned the objection into one sentence about why it all belongs together. thats conviction you can pitch.
here's what it means long term. as capital gets more crowded and more conflicted, the founders who raise well won't be the ones with the best lawyers. they'll be the ones whose customers, partners and referrers would follow them anywhere.... an investor can split a bet, but they can't split that.
so try one move this week. pick the prospect you've been agreeing with too much and tell them the truth about what won't work. then watch who comes back with a referral.
if you want a system that fills your calendar with more of those conversations, it's on the offer page... you keep every relationship, and nobody can promise who says yes.
so who in your pipeline is waiting for you to stop being polite?
