can ai agents trade for you... alchemy on x

can ai agents trade for you? a guest who built rails for $40b in notional says agents belong on top of the engine, not inside it.

can ai agents trade for you? i put some version of that question to a guest on the show this week, and his answer was the funniest thing i heard all week.

"this is the equivalent of like, you know, discovering alchemy and then like putting it out on x, right? you wouldn't do that, right?"

think about it for a second. if someone had an agent that beat professional traders every time, they wouldn't be selling it to you for a monthly fee. they.d be turning lead into gold in a basement somewhere.

he isn't an ai skeptic. he ran a platform on wall street and now builds institutional derivatives rails. his firm has processed north of forty billion dollars in notional, most of it options. he lives where mistakes cost real money.

so his line on agents is careful. research, yes. analysis, yes. reading market dynamics and summarizing what's moving, yes. execution, no.

because hallucinations and outputs that change every time you ask have no place in the part of the system that moves money. you want the same input to give the same output, every single time.

his model is an intelligence layer on top of deterministic rails. the same way coding tools sit on top of models. the agent thinks, suggests, drafts. the boring, battle-tested system underneath does the thing that can't be wrong.

and he earned that view the hard way.

in 2022 an exchange collapse wiped out a full integration his team had built. months of work, gone, because the venue on the other end stopped existing.

he also told me venues behave differently from their own api docs once you hit real scale. the docs say one thing. the system under load does another. you only find out when your money is in the gap.

so his rule became simple. stress test everything. trust nothing at face value.

the lesson he took wasn't to integrate with more venues. it was to integrate deeper, with defensive logic, so the next collapse or the next undocumented behaviour doesn't take you down with it. depth beats count.

and notice what he didn't say. he didn't say agents are useless. he uses them. he said put them where a wrong answer costs you a reread, not where it costs you the account.

that's a design choice most founders never make on purpose. they bolt the model into the middle of the workflow because the demo looks magical, and then they spend a year building guardrails around something that should never have been in that seat.

so the real lesson for you has less to do with trading and more to do with what you're building.

every founder i talk to right now has an agent story. most of them are describing the brain and skipping the skeleton. what does your agent sit on? what happens when the model has a bad day? what's the boring part of your system that can't hallucinate, and who tested it under load?

it's like a great chef in a kitchen with bad wiring. the talent is real. but if the stove cuts out during dinner service, nobody remembers the menu.

this is close to home for me. bitcoin works because the base layer is deterministic and boring on purpose. same rules, every block, for everyone. the creativity happens on top. i think the agent economy ends up with the same shape... wild intelligence at the top, dull and dependable rails underneath.

long term, the money in this cycle won't go to whoever has the cleverest agent. agents get copied. it'll go to whoever built the rails the agents can't break.

if you want to hear more founders who are building the rails instead of the hype, they're all on the show.

so what's under your agent... and have you tried to break it yet?
