he replaced size with speed

a physicist who knew nothing about acoustics fixed a hundred and fifty year old trade off by asking a different question.

speakers have not changed in a hundred and fifty years. a membrane moves, it pushes air, your ear reads the pressure as sound. shrink the membrane and you lose the music. everyone accepted that trade.

a physicist i spoke with this month did not accept it.

his background is ultrafast lasers and quantum optics. he had built companies in silicon photonics and in packaging for leds. he knew close to nothing about acoustics, which turned out to be the qualification.

he asked a different question. not how do i make a small speaker sound big. instead, what is a tiny thing actually good at? and the answer is ultrasound. something the width of a hair is excellent at vibrating fast and hopeless at pushing air the slow way. so they built a structure that vibrates four hundred thousand times a second, then modulates that ultrasound back down into the range you can hear.

the acoustics people did not believe him. they told him, we can measure that it works, now explain it, because a small speaker moves a small amount of air and you are claiming the output of a large one.

it took his own team another year to understand their own invention. the physics is not a speaker at all. it is a pump. in the time a normal driver moves once, theirs moves four hundred times. same air, moved by speed instead of size.

he compares it to the vacuum cleaner that got small. before, those machines were heavy because the pump was slow. swap slow and large for fast and small, and you move the same air, and now it runs on a battery, and now it fits in a cupboard.

the constraint you inherited is usually a form, not a law. nobody wrote down that a speaker has to be a cone. the cone is what was possible in 1877, and everyone since has been optimising inside that shape instead of underneath it. the same is true of your onboarding, your pricing page, and the org chart you copied from a company that no longer exists.

one more thing worth stealing. at three months old, with a proof of concept that could barely play a tone, he was on planes talking to the companies that would eventually buy from him. not pitching. asking what hurts. he says that is the non obvious lesson in deep tech, because deep tech founders hide in the lab until it works and then discover what they built.
