the interview is the sale

i thought the podcast was marketing and the selling happened later. it turns out they are the same fifteen minutes.

i worked out this week why the show actually works, and it is not the reason i had been telling myself.

i used to treat it as marketing. content at the top, selling somewhere further down, two different jobs on two different days.

that is wrong. it is one motion.

a cold email asking for someone's time puts them straight into a defensive crouch. an invitation to be interviewed puts them in a spotlight, and the whole company forwards it to the founder inside the hour. same fifteen minutes, opposite physics.

then comes the pre interview, and i am asking about their market, their growth, what they are raising, what has not been working. every one of those is a discovery question. i am not smuggling it in. they want to answer, because that is literally what the episode is about.

then the interview itself, where i am the one in the chair steering, so the conversation goes somewhere useful for both of us.

then they share it. their audience, their words, their framing of their own story. my cold list turns into their warm one, and they are the one holding the microphone.

marketing and selling stopped being two departments this week. they are the same conversation, and the other person is glad it happened.

what changes if your top of funnel and your first sales call are the same fifteen minutes?
