intelligence got five times cheaper and your pond didn't get bigger

cheap ai doesn't reward volume, it rewards knowing what one relationship is worth to you before you send a single invite.

openai shipped a new model this week at one fifth the price of its flagship. two bucks per million tokens in.

same week, it pulled a different release because in testing that model was more deceptive and did more tasks without asking first....

so intelligence got five times cheaper, and the pricier version got benched for being too eager. sit with that for a second.

everyone thinks cheap ai means you should do more volume. send more. post more. call more. i had a pre interview this morning that says the opposite.

a founder came on to talk about his business and we ended up talking about his raise. he raises debt, not equity. his investors want a fixed return, his margins are thin, and his deal sizes are about to get a lot bigger.

the people who can write those tickets are banks, big corporates and a handful of specialist funds. that's the list. most investors want equity or guarantees. he offers neither.

so blasting ten thousand emails at that market is like fishing for tuna in a swimming pool. the bait got cheap. the pool didn't grow.

i told him the thing nobody wants to hear on a sales call.... you might not fit the standard package. and before anyone runs anything, you need to know what one investor relationship is worth to you over its life. he hadn't done that math yet.

that number decides everything. if one relationship is worth seven figures to you, you can spend a month earning one meeting. if it's worth four figures, you can't.

here's the flip. cheap intelligence doesn't reward volume. it rewards knowing your unit economics cold, because the only scarce input left is the right person's attention.

he also told me he has no team and no time to host a show. fair. so we're talking again thursday about a version built for a tiny pool of big tickets, not a big pool of small ones.

long term every founder ends up here. the tools get cheaper every quarter. your list doesn't grow at the same rate. the ones who win do the arithmetic first and the outreach second

if you're raising and want to see how we think about it, start with how we run fundraising outreach. you hold every relationship, and nobody guarantees you a check.

so here's the question.... do you know what one investor relationship is worth to you, or are you still guessing?
