half price intelligence and a muscle car on a curve

two labs made ai smarter and cheaper on the same afternoon, which means the model just stopped being your edge.

two of the biggest ai labs dropped new models yesterday.... ninety minutes apart.

one cut its output price from $25 to $20 per million tokens. the other halved its api prices and claimed about half the mistakes. smarter and cheaper on the same afternoon.

everyone read that as good news for builders. i read it as the end of an excuse.

because when intelligence gets cheaper every two months, it stops being your edge. your competitor rents the same brain you do. same price. same speed. same output.

so what's left?

i had a call this morning with a founder who has spent years reading what customers say about brands when nobody is asking them. not surveys. the stuff people write on their own.

he told me something i havent stopped thinking about. a five star review is often about the checkout, not the product. and a three star review can hide real love for the product, buried under a bad buying experience.

read that again. the score lies. the words don't.

he also bootstrapped for years and kept away from venture money on purpose. his line was that velocity without direction is a muscle car on a curve.... lots of horsepower, then a tree.

that's what yesterday was. horsepower got cheaper for the whole planet.

but horsepower was never the hard part. the hard part is knowing which road. knowing what your buyer means when they say fine. knowing the three star customer is your biggest fan who hasn't been heard yet.

and you only learn that one way. you talk to people. you listen longer than feels comfortable. you ask a question and then you shut up

it's why i stopped pitching cold and started giving first.... i invite people onto the show, put the spotlight on their work, and let the conversation do what an email never could. a twenty minute taping teaches me more about a market than a month of dashboards. here's how we turn outreach into conversations.

long term, the models will keep getting cheaper. every quarter. that's gravity now.

the founders who win won't be the ones with the best model. they'll be the ones who know what their customers are saying in the three star reviews.

so here's the uncomfortable part.... when was the last time you heard a customer describe your product in their own words, without you leading the witness?
