you can't hire someone to carry your conviction for you

chatgpt just gave everyone the same buttons, so the one edge left in sales is the founder who started the company.

did you see chatgpt yesterday.... openai rolled out a new model and a new face for it. charts you can edit, buttons you can tap, little calculators sitting right inside the chat.

their product lead said it out loud. chatgpt has been a text box. not anymore.

cool. but here's the part nobody is saying. every company you compete with gets the same buttons on the same day. the tools became the floor, not the edge.

so what's left?

i sat down with an agency founder on the show this week. decades running big brands, then six years ago he started his own shop with his partner. two clients followed them out the door on day one.

a few months in they did what every founder is told to do. they hired a head of new business. a pro. someone whose whole job was to go win work so the founders could stop selling.

it didn't work. his read on why.... no outsider could carry the thing the two founders carried into every room. the conviction, the history, the scar tissue.

six years later his answer hasn't changed. the two founders are still the best new business engine the company has. the people who have been there longest are now learning to tell the story too, and he sees that as the next stage of growth.

and when i asked what makes one brand worth choosing when everyone has the same ai, he didn't hesitate. the human on top of the tool.

here's the flip. you think your problem is that you can't hand off sales. your problem is that you're trying to hand off the wrong part.

your voice isn't the bottleneck. your calendar is.

think of it like a great home cook. you can photocopy the recipe and hand it to anyone. you can't photocopy the hands. so you don't hire new hands.... you get more people to the table.

that's the whole idea behind the show. close to 600 guests, and every one of those conversations started with a founder talking like a founder, not a rep reading a script. the machine does the inviting. i do the talking. the relationship stays with whoever owns it.

if you want to see how that works for your own company, here's how i put a founders voice in front of more rooms.

long term this gets more true, not less. when every pitch deck, every email and every chat window looks the same, the one thing left that can't be copied is the person who started it.

so be honest with yourself.... what part of your sales are you trying to hire away that nobody else can do?
